Bus Trips (Day)
Bus Trip – National Underground Railway Museum Freedom Center and Washington Park in Cincinnati
Wednesday, June 20, 2018
The museum not only documents the struggle of America’s slaves for freedom, but other past and ongoing fights against oppression. In the Mid-19th Century, when the United States was divided between free
and slave states, conductors on the Underground Railroad aided freedom seekers on their journey north. The Ohio River Valley was an active site along this passage to freedom.
Following a box lunch at the museum we will travel by bus to Washington Park. Once a cemetery, the park was acquired by the city in 1858. We will have a docent-led tour to hear the remarkable history of this park. Walkways throughout make this a walker and wheelchair-friendly park. The park sits on the edge of Over-the-Rhine area and its makeover is considered the kickstarter for developmentsin that area.
On our way home we will stop at Natorp’s Nursery in Mason. The Natorp family has had this nursery for over 100 years. There are several members of the family’s 4 th generation operating this landscaping and nursery business. It is known for its friendly helpfulness and huge selection of plant material. (There is ample
space beneath the bus to hold all of our purchases.)
